I rarely use gouache, and really, don't even think about gouache when I'm painting with watercolors. However, I had used masking fluid on the marbles' highlights (masking fluid--a bottle not used in the last decade) and discovered that the old fluid was so old that it left bright orange stains when I lifted it off.
I covered them with white gouache. Not perfect, but better than bright orange highlightts!
The marbles weren't standing out from the background, so the gouaching continued with a light white background wash.
